Lee Chaston
A qualified gas service engineer and electrician since 1984, Lee joined BRE as a Technical Trainer in January 2010. Lee has been responsible for a wide range of training programmes specialising in the delivery and development of course material.
Profile
BREEAM is a third-party certification assessment of an asset’s environmental, social and economic sustainability performance, using standards developed by BRE. The various training programmes are based on classroom or virtual teaching and eLearning self-study courses via BRE Academy’s Moodle website. In addition, Lee developed and delivered training programmes for internal members of staff at BRE such as Commercial Essentials, Managing People, Project Management, Customer Care and ISO27001 and has been a lead trainer for BRE Group Health & Safety department delivering courses on topics such as Behavioural Safety Orientation, Fire Safety and Risk Assessments.
Expertise
As a qualified assessor, Lee delivers classroom and virtual events in the United Kingdom and globally for the following schemes: BREEAM Communities (master-planning), BREEAM AP – Design, BREEAM AP – Site (Site Sustainable Manager), BREEAM UK New Construction, BREEAM International New Construction, BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment, BREEAM In-Use and Home Quality Mark (HQM). In addition, Lee is also qualified for BREEAM International Refurbishment & Fit-Out, the Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) and CEEQUAL (civil engineering, infrastructure, landscaping and works in public spaces) schemes.
As a trainer for BREEAM, Lee extensively knows of the third-party certification process that it relates to. Owing to the differences between BREEAM schemes, Lee understands the individual scheme scopes, the scoring and rating system, their categories and issues and the evidential requirements linked to assessment of the project. This is then taught to new and existing assessors and new advisory professionals with the aim to prepare them for the schemes examinations that they are studying. Once they successful pass the examinations, by becoming qualified, they can then apply for their BREEAM license from where they can access actual projects.
Professional Experience
As a former project manager, Lee was responsible for coordinating and supervising all aspects of refurbishment projects including structural alterations. This involved working closely with clients, designers, and architects as well as the various trades associated within the built environment. Lee was extensively involved in the project’s supplier procurement as well as the logistics of resources and waste (people, machinery, equipment, quantity, and spaces). Lee scheduled timeframes, identified availability in the planning process and the potential constraints (schedule, cost, and scope) as well as defining the roles and responsibilities of each member working on the project.
Lee was also responsible for the education and qualifications of engineers and apprentices as a part of their on-going training programme as well as being his former company’s health and safety representative.
Since joining BRE, Lee has become qualified for the various BREEAM schemes mentioned above by passing the relevant examinations which has enabled him the deliver training course programmes with confidence.
