The Golden Thread of Information refers to the digital record of a building’s design, construction, and safety information throughout its life cycle. Intended to be a single source of truth, the Golden Thread ensures that accurate, up-to-date information is accessible to all relevant stakeholders and duty holders, enabling them to understand a building and the steps needed to keep it, and the people within it, safe.
A Golden Thread is legally required for all higher-risk Buildings (HRBs), according to the Building Safety Act 2022. During the design and construction phase, the client or someone on their behalf is responsible for creating and maintaining the Golden Thread. During occupation, an accountable person, such as a building manager, has a duty to keep it updated.
Drawing from our built environment expertise, our Digitalisation of Building Safety and the Golden Thread course provides an awareness of the process involved in creating, exchanging and storing key building safety and fire performance information to create the Golden Thread.
Delivered online, this Golden Thread training course covers key standards and regulations for building safety, fire safety, and information management using BIM, which support the Building Safety Act. It also explains individual roles and responsibilities under the Building Safety Act.
Developed by BRE’s information management and digital construction specialists, the course provides practical examples of how to create and manage the required data for the Golden Thread, according to international standards for information management using BIM (ISO 19650 parts 1 and 2).
After completing this course, learners will be able to:
- Have a greater understanding of the Building Safety Act
- Grasp the key standards and regulations that support the Building Safety Act in a practical way
- Understand the necessary processes to implement information management processes within their own organisation
- Effectively deliver data as part of the Golden Thread.
