BREEAM Refurbishment and Fit Out (RFO) Commercial V7 provides a recognised framework for reducing environmental impacts, improving building performance, and delivering more sustainable commercial spaces.

Designed exclusively for assessors currently licensed under the BREEAM New Construction (NC) scheme, this course builds on your existing knowledge and equips you with the specialist skills needed to assess refurbishment, renovation, and tenant improvement projects with confidence.

Throughout the course, you will:

  • Explore how BREEAM sustainability principles apply specifically to existing buildings, refurbishment projects, and fit outs.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of the RFO Commercial V7 schemes and its assessment requirements.

  • Gain practical experience using BRE assessment tools and platforms for RFO submissions.
  • Learn how to effectively support project teams in maximising sustainability performance and achieving higher BREEAM ratings.

Upon successful completion, you will be eligible to apply to extend your BREEAM licence to include BREEAM Refurbishment and Fit Out Commercial V7. This will enable you to assess projects under both the New Construction V7 and Refurbishment and Fit Out V7 schemes, helping you broaden your service offering, unlock new commercial opportunities, and add greater value to your clients.

After completing the course learners will be able to

  • Conduct independent BREEAM RFO assessments in line with current standards
  • Confidently apply program requirements to live refurbishment and fit out projects
  • Manage and submit assessments using BRE’s BREEAM Platform
  • Expand your professional offering to include high-demand retrofit and upgrade projects
  • Successfully passing this course and examinations enables you to apply for your assessor’s licence under the BREEAM Refurbishment and Fit Out programs.

You must be a currently licensed BREEAM assessor under the BREEAM New Construction scheme to book onto this course.

This course builds on your existing BREEAM foundation, introducing you to the specific challenges, opportunities, and technical considerations of refurbishment and fit out projects. You’ll gain practical insight into how to evaluate performance, align with program requirements, and support project teams in achieving meaningful sustainability outcomes.

Online course material:

Through interactive online modules, you will be introduced to the program, building on your New Construction knowledge.

Examination

The course concludes with one online examination, scheduled by the learner with ProctorU, the appointed online proctor for examinations on behalf of BRE Academy. The examination must be passed for learners to be recognised as having successfully completed the program.

The exam is in an ‘open book’ format, meaning you can use any documents related to the course to aid you. The cost of the exam is included with the course purchase price.
