As of the 16th of April 2025, Home Quality Mark (HQM) has been rebranded to BREEAM New Construction: Residential, and an updated version of the scheme has been launched.  Please be aware, course content will remain listed as HQM, and according to the V6 version of the scheme for now and will be updated in due course.

This training course teaches the technical content and application of the BREEAM UK New Construction: Residential scheme, equipping delegates with the skills and confidence to carry out assessments on new construction residential projects in the UK.

Successfully passing this course and examination enables delegates to apply for a license under the BREEAM UK New Construction: Residential scheme. Assessors must have this license to complete BREEAM UK New Construction: Residential assessments.

After completing the course learner will be able to:

  • Understand the context for BREEAM UK New Construction: Residential and its market
  • Understand and be confident in assessing the technical aspects of the scheme
  • Understand the assessment and certification process, and support structures in place for the scheme and assessors
  • Navigate the BREEAM UK New Construction: Residential technical manual
  • Successfully carry out BREEAM UK New Construction: Residential assessments on new construction residential projects in the UK.

Learners must be an existing, qualified assessor in at least one of the following:

  • Code for Sustainable Homes
  • EcoHomes
  • BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment
  • BREEAM UK New Construction
  • BREEAM UK Refurb and fit-out

It is highly recommended, but not required, that learners are qualified in BREEAM UK New Construction 2018 (or later). This is because there are lots of similarities between this scheme and BREEAM New Construction: Residential and this training course has been written to highlight these.

This course consists of approximately 15 hours of online, own-pace training material related to BREEAM UK New Construction: Residential (UKNCR).

The course will take learners through the following units:

Unit 0 – Foundations

  • Introduction to UKNCR and how it works.

Unit 1 – Our Surroundings: Technical criteria

  • Transport and movement
  • Outdoors
  • Safety and resilience

Unit 2 – My Home: Technical criteria

  • Comfort
  • Energy
  • Materials
  • Space
  • Water

Unit 3 – Delivery: Technical criteria

  • Quality assurance
  • Construction impacts
  • Customer experience

Online examination

The course concludes with an online examination, set at a day and time to be agreed between the learner and ProctorU, who invigilate examinations on behalf of BRE Academy.

The following examination must be passed for learners to be able to apply for their BREEAM UK New Construction: Residential license:

• HQM Technical examination

The examination uses an ‘open book’ format, meaning you can use any documents related to the course to aid you.
