Introduction: From Discussion to Delivery

I had the pleasure of attending the MMC Ireland Conference on the 5 March. Events like these are always valuable, not just to support my understanding of where industry is heading but what more can be done to support professionals.

What was clear was Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) is no longer just a topic for innovation panels or future-thinking strategy documents, but MMC is part of everyday projects and delivery across the built environment.

Alongside the enthusiasm for new approaches, there is also a very practical question being asked by many of the professionals I spoke with:

“How do we encourage wider adoption?”

Leaders are considering approaches taken by other countries and industries, what lessons can be learnt and how can we bring about meaningful implementation. The shift toward MMC brings huge opportunities for improving efficiency, quality and sustainability in construction. At the same time it requires industry to strengthen skills, collaborate and effectively manage information to fully realise potential.

That is where training, and organisations like BRE Academy, can play a crucial role.

MMC Is Changing How We Deliver Projects

Across the conference discussions, one theme was clear: construction is becoming increasingly manufacturing-led, digitally enabled and data-driven.

MMC approaches are helping industry to tackle some of the long-standing challenges of the construction sector, including skills shortages and productivity gaps. With a need to deliver buildings faster and safer, while maintaining high standards, and there were many in the room who were able to share successes.

But adopting these approaches is not simply about changing construction techniques, it also means rethinking how projects are designed, coordinated and managed – right from the earliest stages.

Additionally, the professionals delivering projects need to understand not only construction processes, but also how digital tools, structured data and collaborative workflows support modern construction methods.

The Digital Backbone Behind MMC

One of the most important enablers of MMC is digital construction. Tools and platforms that support connected data environments and digital engineering, are helping project teams coordinate information, reduce design conflicts and ensure everyone is working from the same reliable data.

This is particularly important when components are manufactured away from site. When decisions are made earlier in the design process, accurate information becomes critical to enabling repeatable, scalable and accurate production.

These capabilities are also closely linked to regulatory expectations introduced through the Building Safety Act, particularly the requirement to maintain the Golden Thread of information throughout the lifecycle of a building.

In other words, strong information management in construction is no longer just a technical advantage, it is becoming a core requirement for building safety compliance.

The Skills Gap We Need to Address

While the technologies and construction methods behind MMC continue to evolve quickly, the conversations I had with fellow members of MMC Ireland reinforced something we hear regularly across the industry:

“Many organisations are still building the skills needed to implement these approaches confidently.”

At BRE Academy, our focus has always been on ensuring that learning is relevant, practical and directly connected to what professionals are dealing with in their day-to-day work. The built environment is changing quickly, and training needs to keep pace with that change.

How BRE Academy Supports the Industry

A key part of my role and that of my colleagues in our Academy team, is spending time with professionals across the sector. Whether that is through our courses, conferences, visiting sites or attending industry events, speaking with people is so important to understand first-hand what the challenges are and gain feedback.

What we consistently hear is that organisations are looking for “practical support to help their teams adapt to new ways of working.”

That is exactly where BRE Academy can help.

Our training programmes are designed to give professionals the skills they need to navigate an increasingly digital and regulated construction environment. We support organisations through:

ISO 19650 and digital construction training: Helping teams to understand how to effectively capture and manage data to coordinate projects through structured data to support delivery – processes and governance, in order to maintain the Golden Thread of information throughout an assets full lifecycle is critical.

Regulatory awareness linked to the Building Safety Act: Ensuring professionals understand the information responsibilities that now sit alongside design and construction.

As we are part of BRE, we are also able to bring that heritage of research, technical expertise and real-world insight directly into our training programmes—ensuring that learning reflects both industry practice and emerging best practice.

Turning Insight into Action

One of the things I always enjoy about attending industry events like MMC Ireland is the opportunity to connect with people who are genuinely committed to improving the way we design, build and manage the built environment.

The conversations are always inspiring, but the real value comes when those insights are translated into practical changes in how projects are delivered.

For builds adopting MMC, that means ensuring teams have the right skills in place to manage digital information, collaborate effectively and meet evolving regulatory requirements.

It’s clear that organisations are not only seeking to attract and upskill their workforce, but they are thinking outside of the box. Where can, or should, we be looking to attract people who have the skills which the future of the construction industry needs and perhaps more importantly, what can the industry offer to people in return.

With the right knowledge and processes in place, MMC has the potential to transform how we deliver buildings; making them safer, more efficient and better performing throughout their lifecycle.

At BRE Academy, we are committed to helping organisations navigate this transition through practical training in BIM, digital construction and information management.
